The Palio dell’Assunta in Siena is a historic and vibrant horse race held annually on August 16th. This event, deeply rooted in medieval traditions, takes place in the picturesque Piazza del Campo. It is one of the two Palios held in Siena each year, the other being the Palio di Provenzano on July 2nd.

What is the Palio dell’Assunta?

The Palio dell’Assunta is more than just a horse race; it is a celebration of Siena’s rich cultural heritage and community spirit. The race features ten of Siena’s seventeen contrade (districts), each represented by a horse and jockey. The event is steeped in tradition, with each contrada having its own unique colors, songs, and rituals.

Key Dates & Structure

Race Day: Saturday, August 16, 2025 in Piazza del Campo
Four-Day Festival: August 13–16, 2025, culminating in the race as per longstanding tradition
Horse Selection (“Tratta”): Held on the morning of August 13—the horses are medically vetted, grouped into “batterie,” and race laps to demonstrate readiness
Trial Races: Morning trials at 9:00 AM, evening trials at 7:15 PM on Aug 13, 14, and 15; piazza gates close ~45 minutes before each session
Prova Generale (General Rehearsal): Evening of August 15, typically starting ~7:15 PM, preceded by ceremonial “Carica dei Carabinieri.” Gates close by ~6:45 PM

Race Day & Festivities

• 7:30 AM – Messa del Fantino (jockey’s mass) in piazza chapel
• 9:00 AM – Provaccia (last official trial)

• ~4:00 PM – Corteo Storico (Grand Parade) winds from Piazza del Duomo through the city into Piazza del Campo; access typically closes between 4:30–6:30 PM depending on crowd limits

The Race:

• 7:00 PM – The Palio itself begins with ten horses racing three laps bareback around the piazza’s dirt track, often lasting no more than 90 seconds
• Entry is recommended two hours earlier due to crowd control measures. Children under 10 are generally not permitted in the piazza.

Traditions & Community

• Each contrada brings its own colors, songs, pageantry, and rivalry—reflected not just in the race but throughout processions, dinners, and traditions celebrated all year round
• All events—including trials, the general rehearsal, parade, and race—are free to the public, though seating in grandstands, balconies, or windows is ticketed and often booked in advance
