OPERA
From July 5th to August 9th: Tosca.
On the hundredth anniversary of Puccini’s death, the Caracalla Festival pays tribute to the great composer with two new productions of Tosca and Turandot with creative design and scenes by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, making their opera debut. On the podium, Antonino Fogliani. In the role of Tosca, Carmen Giannattasio and Sonya Yoncheva alternate, while Cavaradossi is played by Saimir Pirgu, Vittorio Grigolo, and Arsen Soghomonyan. In the role of Scarpia, instead, Claudio Sgura and Roberto Frontali.
From July 16th to August 10th: Turandot.
In the role of the protagonist, two exceptional interpreters: Angela Meade and Lise Lindstrom. In the role of Calaf, Luciano Ganci, Brian Jagde, and Arsen; in the role of Liù, Maria Grazia Schiavo and Juliana Grigoryan. On the podium, Donato Renzetti. The orchestra and chorus, directed by Ciro Visco, with the participation of the School of Choral Singing, are those of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.
The direction of the two operas is entrusted to Francesco Micheli; costumes by Giada Masi; videos by Luca Scarzella.
The opera proposal is completed with the young talents of “Fabbrica,” the Young Artist Program of the Theater, and the School of Choral Singing. Three appointments at the Portico Theater:
On June 26th, Regnava nel silenzio is staged, a tribute to the music of Verdi and Donizetti with the singers of the “Fabbrica” project;
On June 28th and July 8th, two concerts by the School of Choral Singing are scheduled.
DANCE
July 9th and 10th: The Roman nights of Dior, an evening that combines fashion, music, and dance starring Eleonora Abbagnato, who, together with the étoiles, the first dancers, the soloists, and the Ballet Corps of the Rome Opera, wears the creations of Maria Grazia Chiuri of the Maison Dior made for two different ballets: Nuit Romaine and Nuit Dansée. Among the main performers are étoile Rebecca Bianchi and first dancer Michele Satriano. Alvise Casellati conducts the Orchestra of the Foundation.
July 19th and 20th: Roberto Bolle and Friends, once again, the worldwide icon of ballet is the undisputed star of the unmissable Caracalla Festival appointment.
CONCERTS
July 23rd: Disney Fantasia – Live in concert, the great animation of Walt Disney in a symphonic concert that also embraces cinema. Timothy Brock conducts the live soundtrack performed by the Orchestra of the Rome Opera, while some of the highlights of Fantasia (1940) and its sequel Fantasia 2000 are projected on the big screen.
July 30th: Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. Wayne Marshall, in the dual role of pianist and conductor, pays tribute to the hundred years of this extraordinary musical composition, a masterful synthesis of classical music, jazz, and blues. Among the pieces proposed: Porgy and Bess, An American in Paris, and the overture from the musical Girl Crazy. Also on the program is the suite Three Dance Episodes from On the Town by Leonard Bernstein.
CINEMA
The Puccini Film Festival is also dedicated to Puccini, with three evenings at the Portico Theater.
– On June 27th, the great composer comes alive through Puccini and the Girl by Paolo Benvenuti (2008) and the vintage film A Day with Puccini (circa 1918), restored and made available by the Cineteca of Bologna.
– On July 1st, three reinterpretations of the story of Madama Butterfly are featured, including the Italian premiere of Madame Butterfly’s Illusion by Wagoro Arai (1940, from the National Film Archive of Japan), Aria by Pjotr Sapegin (2001), and M. Butterfly by David Cronenberg (1993).
– On July 4th, two films inspired by Tosca: a fragment, restored by the Cineteca of Bologna, of Tosca by Alfredo De Antoni (1918) and Before Him, All Rome Trembled by Carmine Gallone (1946) with Anna Magnani.
THEATER
The Portico Theater hosts:
– On June 29th and July 2nd, Massimiliano Finazzer Flory pays homage to Puccini with Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore. Waiting for Giacomo Puccini, a reading with live musical interludes that combines Puccini’s centenary with that of the first radio broadcast.
– On July 17th and 20th, Valerio Magrelli is on stage with Romantics&Co., a survey on the theme of romanticism and its evolution from the nineteenth century to today.
CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS
A great novelty of Caracalla 2024, also on the occasion of Puccini’s centenary, are the performances of circus artists on stage at the Portico Theater: on June 25th and 26th, the blucinQue company brings Puccini Dance Circus Opera, for bodies and instruments. The protagonist is a choir of women in motion, whose movement in space is structured into aerial and earthly choreographies accompanied by Puccini’s music, with electronic interferences. Women who support each other, fall, and rise again, bringing out characteristics, signs, and personalities of five heroines from Puccini’s operas: Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Turandot, and Mimì.
JAZZ
The Portico Theater hosts two concerts on July 18th and August 5th, and three nights of Late Night Jazz on July 31st, August 2nd, and 3rd, scheduled at a time that allows the participation of opera spectators, on stage on the same evenings before the jazz nights.
