This epic 23+ kilometer / 14 mile route mainly follows the historic Appian Way, one of the oldest and most important Roman roads, offering a unique chance to walk in the footsteps of emperors, soldiers, and traders. As you leave behind the bustling heart of Rome, you’ll find yourself immersed in the tranquility of the Roman countryside, with stunning views of rolling hills, ancient tombs, and ruins along the way.

Return to Rome by train.

The hike is a true challenge, suitable for seasoned hikers who crave more than just a scenic stroll. It’s a half-day, strenuous trek that pushes your physical limits, combining rugged terrain with fascinating history.

The journey culminates at the charming town of Castel Gandolfo, famous for its breathtaking views over Lake Albano and the Papal Palace. After a day of physical exertion and historical discovery, unwind and enjoy a well-deserved break (and the chance to try the typical, local food: porchetta) in this peaceful town, knowing you’ve conquered one of Italy’s most legendary paths.

ℹ️ The final duration of the hiking event and the itinerary may vary, depending on weather conditions, unexpected obstacles (e.g. a fallen tree along the way), or other safety reasons. It is at the discretion of the professional hiking guide to determine alternatives or to shorten or extend the experience.

What should you bring?

Obligatory: Hiking boots, 1.5 liters of water, clothing suited for an outdoor hike, backpack, bring your own hiking lunch
Recommended: Comfortable backpack, raincoat, sunscreen, hat (protection from both sun and rain), trail snacks, tickets for public transport
Optional: Hiking poles, electrolytes, sunglasses

Who is the guide?
Sal, a certified outdoor guide (member of AIGAE), leads this tour. He’s also a former Komoot route editor and a National Geographic Day Tour guide. His mission is to make information about the Italian outdoors and wilderness experiences accessible to everyone and to promote a healthier lifestyle and connection with nature.
