Starting from March 15th, the Napoleon Museum in Rome hosts an exhibition titled “Giuseppe Primoli and the Fascination of the Orient.” The exhibition showcases a rare collection of 14 kakemono previously owned by Giuseppe Primoli. These vertical hanging scrolls feature classic Japanese painting themes such as “flowers and birds,” portraying flowers, branches with leaves and fruits, birds, owls, cranes, herons, butterflies, and lakeside landscapes. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view approximately 70 valuable items, including prints, paintings, manuscripts, drawings, engravings, and porcelain, revealing the interest in the Orient by the Bonaparte-Primoli family. The exhibition highlights the influence of Japanese art on late 19th-century European culture and collecting practices. Additionally, a section of the exhibition focuses on the Grand Tour in India undertaken by Count Luigi Primoli, Giuseppe’s younger brother, from 1904 to 1906, featuring carved stones, painted terracottas, a copy of the Quran on palm leaves, and photographs taken by Luigi himself.
