Roman Summer 2023 is a four-month-long series of events spread throughout the city, featuring film screenings, theater performances, concerts, exhibitions, meetings, guided tours, workshops for children and teenagers, and much more.
From June 15th to October 15th, Rome will be filled with events of various sizes, all focused on promoting a sustainable environment and accessibility for everyone.
This year, cinema takes center stage with 24 open-air arenas and numerous dedicated initiatives, including those organized by the Fondazione Cinema per Roma. One of the highlights is the second edition of Roma Cinema Arena, a large 1,000-seat arena located at the Aqueduct Park. The Fondazione also presents the summer program at Casa del Cinema, housed in the Ettore Scola Theater within the lush surroundings of Villa Borghese Park. Additionally, Alice nella CittĂ organizes the Floating Theater arena at Villa Ada Lake.
However, Estate Romana 2023 offers much more than just cinema. Below is a selection of the events and reviews scheduled throughout the city for this edition.
July:
– Mark your calendars for the third edition of “Sempre piĂą fuori” (Always More Outside), a multidisciplinary event taking place at the Goethe Institut and the German Academy of Rome at Villa Massimo. This exciting review features book presentations, performances, shows, screenings, and a photographic exhibition, all aimed at fostering the encounter of diverse cultures and abilities.
– Get ready for “Arcadia Urbana – Festa di Teatro Eco-Logico” (Urban Arcadia – Ecological Theater Festival) in Rome. This unique theatrical review focuses on ecological sensitivity, with all events taking place without electricity.
August:
-Prepare to be inspired by “Energie Creative” (Creative Energies), a festival of live expressions in the realms of theater, music, and dance. Spread across various locations in the XIII Municipality, this inclusive and multicultural event features eight captivating performances with both emerging artists and established performers taking the stage.
– Experience the vibrant atmosphere of “Roma CittĂ Aperta” (Rome Open City), where you can embark on open visits to the studios of numerous artists. With the guidance of contemporary art experts and the presence of cultural mediators, you’ll have the opportunity to explore and engage with the city’s thriving art scene.
–Â Immerse yourself in “Anomalie” (Anomalies), a festival dedicated to the New Contemporary Circus and the Suburbs. Held in the VI Municipality, specifically at Parco delle Canapiglie and Tor Bella Monaca Theatre, this experimental event brings together Italian and international artists, showcasing the dynamic fusion of circus arts and suburban culture.
September:
– In the Torrino district, the “Decima Festival” awaits you with a diverse range of activities for different age groups. From theater performances to electronic music concerts and DJ sets, as well as short film festivals, workshops, and conferences, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
– Don’t miss the XIV edition of the “Festival della Letteratura di Viaggio” (Travel Literature Festival), held between the Casa delle Letterature Library and the Palazzetto Mattei in Villa Celimontana. This captivating event offers book presentations, meetings with authors and journalists, as well as workshops on writing, film-making, and photography. Additionally, you can join urban trekking routes with workshops tailored for professionals in the tourism sector.
These events, along with the rich program of the Roman Summer 2023, are complemented by three additional captivating experiences in fascinating areas of Rome:
Between June and August, the new edition of the “Villa Ada Festival” takes place on the peninsula of Villa Ada Lake. Expect a delightful lineup of concerts, DJ sets, stand-up comedy, editorial presentations, site-specific exhibitions and installations, new media arts, video mapping, and workshops. Look forward to performances by acclaimed artists like Marlene Kuntz.
From June to September, the historic “Village Celimontana” returns at Villa Celimontana, dedicated to jazz music. In addition to exceptional concerts, the calendar includes meetings, dance lessons, music workshops for children and teenagers, as well as talks on the history of jazz.
Piazza Gianicolo, located in Piazzale Garibaldi, hosts a dynamic program from June to September. Expect an exciting lineup of concerts, stand-up comedy, musical writing and comics workshops, dance lessons, engaging debates, and bookcrossing activities.
In addition to these events, “Estate Romana 2023” offers a multitude of other cultural experiences organized by the city’s major cultural institutions. Highlights include the “Letterature International Festival of Rome” at the Stadio Palatino, the Rome Opera House’s new season of events at the Baths of Caracalla, concerts by renowned artists at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in the Cavea of Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, and the Roma Summer Fest featuring big tours and national and international stars. The Fondazione Musica per Roma presents “Summertime” at Casa del Jazz, a summer season showcasing the best of Italian and international contemporary jazz with over 60 concerts and shows. Lastly, the Romaeuropa Festival returns with its 38th edition, organized by the Romaeuropa Foundation, offering extensive programming across 13 spaces in the capital, featuring 90 shows, 300 replicas, and over 500 artists from around the world, exploring the “geographies” of our time through music, dance, theater, the new circus, creations for children, and digital arts.
These remarkable events are complemented by numerous exhibitions scheduled by the Capitoline Superintendency for Cultural Heritage, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the Mattatoio, and the MACRO.
