La grattachecca is an icy summer non-alcoholic beverage composed of various syrups, commonly called a slushie in English. With up to twenty syrups to choose from, the flavor combinations are endless. Famous options include “La Delicata”, a simple lemon and coconut mix and “La Sora Maria”, a fusion of black cherry, tamarind and orange, garnished with fresh coconut and whole pieces of lemon and black cherries.
Trending all over social media this past weekend, La Sora Maria has officially reopened on Via Trionfale, 37. Famous for its appetizing iced drink known as “la grattachecca”, La Sora Maria is a well-known stopover for locals in the Prati district. The historic grand kiosk was established in 1933 by Sora Maria and remains a family business since her death in 2005, now operated by her grandchildren.
The locals’ favorite was happy to announce their post-outbreak reopening on Saturday, responding to the online enthusiasm from the community to RomaToday, “It filled our hearts”.
