Selling a car in Italy is a relatively straightforward process, but it’s crucial to follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth transaction:
1. Ownership: First and foremost, you must be the owner of the car you intend to sell. In Italy, you cannot sell a car on behalf of someone else unless you possess a notarized letter of authorization (delega autenticata dal notaio).
2. Documentation: You will need the car’s registration certificate (libretto di circolazione). Additionally, you must have a certificate of ownership (certificato di proprietà). If your vehicle was registered before October 2015, the ownership certificate exists in paper format. For vehicles registered after this date, it’s an online document generated by the car registration agency during the ownership transfer. In case of loss of the certificate of ownership, you must file a loss report at a police station or Carabinieri. Afterward, visit a car registration agency to request a duplicate.
3. Find a Buyer: You have the flexibility to sell your vehicle to either a dealer or a private individual.
4. Payment: Payments in Italy can be received in various forms, including cash (contanti) within a specific amount (subject to changes, so it’s advisable to verify this), bank draft (assegno circolare), or bank transfer (bonifico bancario).
5. Transfer of Ownership: Visit a car agency (Agenzia di Pratiche Auto) to complete the official registration for the new car ownership.
6. Act of Sale: At the conclusion of the transaction, you should receive an act of sale (atto di vendita). This document serves as proof that the car has been successfully sold.
By adhering to these guidelines, you can confidently navigate the process of selling a car in Italy.
